Episode 11 is the eleventh episode of the first season of All of Us Are Dead.

Synopsis[]

Though a surprise protector provides the group safe passage to their next stop, Yoon Gwi-nam is not far behind. The military makes a grave decision.

Plot[]

Nam So-ju helps the students escape the auditorium as Yoon Gwi-nam finds Jung Min-jae in the archery center. Gwi-nam demands to know where Lee Cheong-san is, and when Min-jae asks who that is, Gwi-nam bites him in the shoulder.

So-ju hugs Nam On-jo, then Cheong-san, before telling the students to go through the tennis courts and construction site to reach the mountain. Zombies begin to chase them, and So-ju tells the survivors to run. When they reach the tennis courts, the zombie horde surrounds them and breaks down the gates, forcing the students to fight them hand-to-hand.

So-ju uses flares to lure the zombies away from the students and give them room to escape. When the zombies notice the students leaving the court, So-ju stays behind to buy them time to escape, telling Cheong-san to look after his daughter and keep her safe. Cheong-san and Lee Su-hyeok drag On-jo away as she screams for her father, begging him to come back. He tells them to run and continues throwing flares to distract the zombies. Cheong-san tries to rescue him, but So-ju, who has been bitten, pushes him out into the forest and locks himself to the gate to keep it shut. The students flee into the forest, though On-ju continues to look back as her father is devoured.

On reaching the construction site, the students are pursued by several zombified builders, but with Nam-ra's ability to tell where other zombies are, they manage to dodge them and escape onto a ledge outside. Nam-ra tells the others to be quiet so as not to give their position away. On-jo breaks down and starts sobbing, so Ha-ri puts a hand over her mouth to muffle the noise. Cheong-san kneels in front of her and pulls her into a hug, telling her it's okay to cry.

So-ju reanimates on the tennis court, staggering forward and bumping into Lee Cheong-san's mother. A voiceover from Byeong-chan's research notes muses that losing someone to the zombie virus is worse than death, as you can forget a dead person but you cannot forget someone who has changed. Seeing the person you loved the most as a zombie means that that is the last mental image you will ever have of them.

In the archery center, Min-jae whimpers and backs away from Gwi-nam as he begins to turn, though he still says he doesn't know anyone called Cheong-san. He tells Gwi-nam he ran to the auditorium with some juniors, then stabs him in the neck with an arrow. Gwi-nam threatens to eat him and tells him to run. Min-jae tries to shoot him with his bow, but is unable to get an accurate shot as his body convulses.

On the construction site ledge, Dae-su blames Mi-jin for Oh Joon-yeong's death. Jang Wu-jin tells them both to stop arguing, as they've all lost friends, teachers and parents, and none of it really matters any more. Ha-ri tries to console On-jo by telling her that her father saved all of them, and that none of the survivors will ever forget what he did. She and Mi-jin go round the building on the scaffolding, trying to find a way out. Once Ha-ri is out of earshot, On-jo says she hopes that no one else will have to sacrifice themselves for the group, because it's too hard trying to live for someone who isn't there any more. Cheong-san tells her that they should get to safety, and then talk about everything, reminding her of their promise to stay alive in the store cupboard.

Gwi-nam arrives in the auditorium and calls out for Cheong-san, but finds only zombies, including Joon-yeong, who he kicks to the floor. He walks through to the door So-ju unlocked for the students and follows the trail up to the tennis courts.

At the quarantine base, the military has begun experimenting with using different sound frequencies to lure zombies in. They decide to use drones to lure zombies into heavily infested target areas before bombing them. They estimate that this will result in approximately 10,000 human or halfbie casualties. only 110,000 Hyosan residents have so far been rescued. Commander Jin Seon-mu orders the evacuation warning to be played nonstop until the explosions are detonated, in order to warn as many human survivors as possible.

Nam-ra begins to experience more severe halfbie symptoms again, and a voice in her head tells her to eat Su-hyeok. Instead she bites down on her own wrist. Su-hyeok tells her to bite him next time, as he wants to be the same as her. Ha-ri and Min-ji return and the group discuss the possibility of escape, concluding that it's probably better to wait until it rains again. At this point the military flies over Hyosan, warning all residents to take shelter underground. Nam-ra hears the warning and passes it on to the others, telling them that the military is planning to blow up Hyosan High School.

Drones are released over the area, producing a 24 khz sound which zombies are attracted to and halfbies find painful to hear. The military uses these to lure the zombies into the chosen target zones, and the hordes begin to congregate as directed, enraged by the sound. The students realize they will die if they stay where they are, but before they can take cover, Gwi-nam arrives and attacks them. He holds Cheong-san over the edge of the scaffolding and bites his arm before being distracted by the drones long enough for Cheong-san to push him over the edge.

A soldier tells Seon-mu that the zombies have all congregated at the chosen points, and Seon-mu gives the order to fire.

On-jo tries to persuade Cheong-san to stay, as he's likely to end up like Nam-ra. Cheong-san gives her his school patch and promises to hold on to hers. He then kisses and hugs her before going into the building to lure the zombies into falling down an empty elevator shaft, shouting that today, he is the happiest guy in the school.

The remaining students escape from the building while Gwi-nam reanimates again, though he ignores them when he hears Cheong-san yelling upstairs. Cheong-san collapses on the roof and begins to turn just as Gwi-nam arrives. Cheong-san goads him again, telling him that he's still a coward afraid of getting caught, whereas Cheong-san has nothing to fear, including Gwi-nam himself. The two fight and Gwi-nam gouges Cheong-san's eye out, licking the blood off his thumb afterwards. Cheong-san begins crawling back to the elevator shaft and Gwi-nam mocks him, assuming he's trying to run away.

At that moment, the bombs begin to hit their targets across Hyosan, with the last one landing on the school. The surviving students witness the explosion from the forest and are knocked down by the force of the blast. Inside the construction site, Cheong-san uses the distraction to grab Gwi-nam and use him as a human shield, pulling both of them down the elevator shaft as they are engulfed by flames.

Seon-mu's chief of staff announces that the bombing of Hyosan is complete. Seon-mu acknowledges this and orders the troops to be sent in in the morning. He passes the command to the chief of staff and tells him he'll do a good job and that he needs to sleep. On the way to his quarters, he visits assemblywoman Park Eun-hee in her cell. He informs her that Hyosan has been bombed, and forty percent of the population is dead. Eun-hee grabs his collar and tells him he's a murderer and should be ashamed of himself. Seon-mu asks if she could tell the survivors that he is truly sorry for what happened, then leaves.

Seon-mu arrives in his office and draws the blinds. He dresses in his full formal uniform and records a message to explain why he ordered the bombing. He takes full responsibility for the bombings and says that, having watched Byeong-chan's recordings - which ended with him burning his zombified wife and son alive - he became convinced that there was no other way to stop the virus other than destroying the infected.

He then calls his wife to ask if she ate dinner and chides her for forgetting before asking after their children, who have apparently missed school for the day. He tells her to hire a tutor for them to make up for it, and then tells her that he misses her, he loves her, and he's sorry. He leaves the phone on his desk, takes a pistol from his drawer, and shoots himself in the head. As his body slumps in his chair, his wife texts him to apologize for yelling at him, and to ask when he can come home.

Hyosan High School has been reduced to a burning wreck. The bodies in the elevator shaft at the construction site lie unmoving, buried in ash. Nam On-jo's school patch can be seen in the wreckage, only slightly burnt at the edges.

Trivia[]

  • Due to undisclosed reasons, characters who were bitten but never seen as zombies such as Park Sun-hwa, Son Myeong-hwan and Yoo Jun-seong weren't seen during the bombing scenes, leaving their fates unknown.
    • Although Yang Han-yeol (Yoo Jun-seong) was still credited in this episode.
  • During the bombing of the sports complex a student wearing the Hyosan High School uniform is seen for a brief second, this implies at least one student managed to make it out the school before the group. other zombified students can also be seen among the crowd of zombies entering the school gate. It's unknown if the zombified students entering the gate just wandered out the gate after turning into a zombie, or were students who fled the school during the start of the outbreak but where infected when the outbreak accelerated in Hyosan.
