Episode 9 is the ninth episode of the first season of All of Us Are Dead.
Synopsis[]
A disturbance at the camp shifts the military's understanding of the virus. A thunderstorm provides cover as the group agrees to keep on moving.
Plot[]
Yoon Gwi-nam reaches the roof and tries to gouge out Lee Cheong-san's eye. Lee Su-hyeok defends him and Gwi-nam throws him across the roof. Cheong-san goads Gwi-nam, calling him a loser. Gwi-nam tells the other students they can go, unless they want to die with Cheong-san. Yang Dae-su and Jang Wu-jin move to protect Cheong-san, who attacks Cheong-san and every student who tries to defend him.
When he attacks Su-hyeok again, Choi Nam-ra enters an enraged, halfbie state and attacks Gwi-nam, stabbing him in the leg. As they fight, Gwi-nam realizes that Nam-ra and he are both halfbies and tries to convince her to join his side, but Nam-ra refuses, grabs him, and throws him off the roof. Su-hyeok tries to comfort her, but she turns away.
At the quarantine camp, scientists are unable to trace the origins of the virus as its RNA structure appears to be evolving on its own. On their arrival at the camp, Song Jae-ik and Jeon Ho-chul tell the soldiers about Lee Byeong-chan's laptop, saying it could hold a key to curing the virus. The military sends a helicopter to retrieve the laptop, and when they land on the roof, the soldier's promise that they will come back for the survivors on their way back to the helicopter.
In the main area of the camp, Kim Cheol-soo encounters Min Eun-ji in the food queue. Eun-ji blames him for her death, saying that he let her go knowing she would die, but brushes it off and says she's starving. Cheol-soo offers her some of his food, but Eun-ji says she doesn't want it - she wants to eat him instead.
The military successfully retrieve the laptop and start winching the Hyosan School students into the helicopter one by one. However, a call comes through from commander Jin Seon-mu. Eun-ji has attacked Cheol-soo and revealed herself as a halfbie; as such, all Hyosan students are now to be considered infected but asymptomatic. Seon-mu orders the soldiers to abandon the students and return to base. The students beg to be taken on board, and Seon-mu orders the soldiers to shoot them, but the soldiers refuse and leave without harming the students, clearly distressed by their orders.
At the base, Park Eun-hee is interrogated about her knowledge of Nam So-ju and Kim U-sin's escape from the camp. Although Kim U-sin denies that anyone else was involved, Eun-hee claims full responsibility for the escape and says that she will always stand with her citizens.
Meanwhile, So-ju himself is moving through an abandoned shopping district, trying to avoid nearby packs of zombies. He is stopped by a man who begs him to free his wife and unborn child from their wrecked car, but So-ju tells the man he does not have the equipment to cut her out. He tries to leave, but the man points a gun at him and tells him that he has to help. So-ju reminds him that if he shoots, the zombies will descend, and tells him that his daughter is waiting for him. As he leaves, the man breaks down in tears, still begging him to help.
Eun-ji pleads with the soldiers to be released as she is strapped to a medical bed at the camp. The scientists conclude that there are probably others like her, and it's best to presume that civilians are infected even if they show no symptoms. Eun-hee and her aides settle down for the night, but U-sin grows angry at their lightheartedness and accuses Eun-hee of using the firefighters for her next election campaign. Eun-hee's main aide tells him that they're one team and they have to stick together before soldiers enter the room and announce that they are taking them to a more secure quarantine zone in handcuffs. The aides form a shield around Eun-hee and U-sin joins them, but all are ultimately led away in handcuffs. The same happens to Song Jae-ik's group, with Se-bin, crying as she is escorted to a cell alone.
At Hyosan High, it begins to rain and thunder, the noise of which appears to cause Nam-ra and Gwi-nam pain. The other rooftop survivors weep in relief as they are able to drink water for the first time since the outbreak, and Su-hyeok rips up small strips of cloth for Nam-ra to use as earplugs, trying to comfort her as the thunder continues. Cheong-san sees this and realizes that the zombies' hearing is likely to be impaired by the thunder, and they could use this to escape to the mountain.
Some of the students are worried about the danger, but Cheong-san offers to lure the zombies away if they're noticed, and Nam-ra says that the zombies' other senses have likely also been impaired by the storm, as hers have been. When Kim Ji-min says that not all the students will be able to keep up, they decide to travel in pairs and hold hands so that no one gets left behind, although Dae-su is left without a partner as the others ignore his request to hold their hand.
The students creep down the stairs to the ground floor, where Ha-ri's group has also decided to use the thunder to escape. Cheong-san offers to lure the zombies away, but On-jo refuses and suggests a different route the rooftop group can all take together. They manage to get to the parking lot, where Cheong-san is shocked to see his mother, now a zombie, staring at him from behind a truck. He imagines her calling his name and asks if it's her, to which the zombie snarls and tries to attack him.

- In the webtoon, the roof was bigger due to the school's H shaped layout, and the group scatter around it calling for On-jo and Cheong-san (who were separated early while the group made a break for the roof).
- In the webtoon, during the rain, at one point Ha-ri notices a survivor running through the football field and tries to help him by shooting arrows at nearby zombies but misses; the group later see the body being eaten by zombies and deduced it was a survivor either trying to flee through the field from the school by using the rains fog to escape or using themselves as bait, this is reinforced by Ha-ri who sees three survivors (she claims to have already seen them but was focused on the one who was the most in danger) hiding in the flower beds near the football field. In the end, Ha-ri is able to fire several arrows at zombies near the three survivors, while the rest go to the other side of the school to lure the zombies away from the survivors, clearing a path for the three to escape. The three survivors' fates are unknown; they are the only known Hyosan students besides the main group to escape the school.
