Eye for an Eye was the final standoff between Lee Cheong-san and Yoon Gwi-nam which took place at the construction site near Hyosan High School. This event is one of the most thrilling and popular battle of Season 1. It took place in Episode 11.
Background[]
After the death of Nam So-ju, the Hyosan School Group found their way onto the Construction site. In the place, the group encounters zombies. However without any casualty, they manage to find a temporary place on a platform attached to the wall of the building free from the zombies’ reach. They soon realized it was the dead end and the group tried to find a way of escaping the situation. Sometime afterward, Choi Nam-ra heard an announcement saying to take cover. The announcement clearly said to hide underground as the Hyosan intersection, the future college and the Hyosan High School will be bombed. Nam-ra reported this announcement to the other members which left the group in a tense situation.
Yoon Gwi-nam who was at that time in the back of the tennis court, suddenly sensed a smell coming from the construction site. He realized the familiar scent and without any hesitation began approaching the site. Meanwhile, Nam-ra again began to lose control over her body but then Lee Su-hyeok’s voice woke her up and he tied a cloth to cover her eye. As the group was thinking of a way to escape, Gwi-nam screamed “Cheong-san!” from the ground floor. Seconds later, he approached at their floor and peeked out of the window to Lee Cheong-san.
Cheong-san and Su-hyeok decide to step up, but Gwi-nam’s mighty punch nearly knocks Su-hyeok out and off the platform. Then he turned towards Cheong-san, who had swung and missed him with his baseball bat, and bites his arm. Meanwhile, the Military sent drones to produce sound of 24Hz which lured the zombies most. This sound affected Gwi-nam who began to cover his ears. Using this distraction, Cheong-san painfully pushed Gwi-nam off the platform. He then kissed his beloved Nam On-jo, hugged her and exchanged their respective nametags. He told Su-hyeok to go to the first floor and escape.
Proudly announcing himself as the ‘happiest guy in school’, Cheong-san lured and fought the zombies upstairs of the construction site with an iron rod and found an elevator shaft to make the zombies fall to the ground floor. After that, he became exhausted and blood started to spill out of his nose.
The Fight[]
Gwi-nam fell into an iron rod which fully impaled him, but it didn’t affect him. His regeneration abilities were so solid as if the fall and the injury did nothing to him. He entered the building trying to find Cheong-san and his friends again and this time too, he sensed a smell and focused on finding Cheong-san allowing the others to escape. He approached and saw Cheong-san all alone this time. First, he threatened Cheong-san saying he will kill him even if it isn’t fun. Cheong-san, exhausted but fearless, said to stop being tough as his toughness doesn’t make him cool, he is still scared about getting caught for killing the principal. Cheong-san called him coward and loser, causing Gwi-nam to shed some tears, and said he has nothing to fear as he simultaneously grabbed an iron rod and a handful of sand.
Enraged, Gwi-nam tried to attack Cheong-san but Cheong-san quickly threw the sand into Gwi-nam's uninjured eye and stabbed him in his chest with the rod. Both of them landed several punches and kicks on each other, however, Gwi-nam eventually gained momentum and threw Cheong-san into a pile of bricks. Cheong-san used one of the bricks and landed a hit on Gwi-nam’s face. Gwi-nam recovered from the impact quickly and jumped onto Cheong-san who was about to pick up the iron rod, and punched him in the face. He then started to kick Cheong-san who was knocked down and looked tired and exhausted. He then stopped kicking, and decided to get his revenge from him. Suddenly out of nowhere, when Cheong-san was recovering from the injuries and pick up the rod, Gwi-nam grabbed his neck, pinning him down and started to press his eye with his thumb. So close to his mission, Gwi-nam smiled as blood started to burst out of Cheong-san’s eye who was screaming his lungs out in agonizing pain. Gwi-nam evilly laughs as he finally gets his payback. He then gouged his eye out and ate it. Cheong-san painfully crawled towards the elevator shaft with Gwi-nam behind laughing and taunting him.
When the military bombed Hyosan High School, the flames reached the construction site. Cheong-san at the right moment got up and grabbed Gwi-nam who had held his ears due to the sound created by the bombing, and fell into the shaft. The flames quickly engulfed both of them as they fell right into the shaft.
Aftermath[]
It’s unclear what happened to Lee Cheong-san and Yoon Gwi-nam after the battle, both of their bodies were not visible at the base of the shaft. The fire happened to be a harmless one as most of the parts in the construction site remained intact. However, the nametag of On-jo was found beneath the shaft. When On-jo, Su-hyeok and Nam-ra visited the site again none of them discovered a trace. Nam-ra even said she smelled nothing.
