Hambies, also referred to as Half-zombies, are special form of zombie-human hybrids that have the enhanced strength, hearing, and agility of normal zombies while retaining human intelligence.

Description[]

Hambies are people who after being infected by the Jonas Virus do not turn feral like normal zombies but instead gaining enhanced strength and agility of conventional zombies. However, they also have a craving for any kind of flesh including human flesh (though the impulse can be controlled, for example, Min Eun-ji ate the fishes in Jung Yong-nam's office before devouring him, as well as Choi Nam-ra, who bit herself and devoured another zombie to ensure she protects her friends from herself), this shown that hambies do not need human flesh to survive as they do crave another type of flesh such as zombie flesh, animal flesh, etc whenever there's no human in sight, as shown by Nam-ra, who was able to survive for four months feeding of off her own flesh and zombie flesh.

It is unknown how one can become a hambie whether a person is naturally asymptomatic to the virus or the following theories, with the best known theory is the host's determination to complete a certain objective while being bit, may turn him/her into a hambie. However, this theory has some flaws. Another theory suggests it depends on the amount of fear you're feeling at the time while being bit or after being bit.

Despite retaining their human intelligence, they are discriminated against as much as normal zombies by the authorities which means most of them have to live in hiding.

Weaknesses[]

Hambies seem to have extremely sensitive hearing, having the ability to hear any capacity of sounds nearby, and also would promptly cover their ears, when it comes to very loud noises, including drones, thunder, gunshots, explosions, etc.

Hambies also will get a overwhelming urge to eat the people near them, like how Choi Nam-ra had the urge to eat Lee Su-hyeok and Nam On-jo, and how Min Eun-ji ate Kim Cheol-soo.

Nam-ra attempted to solve this issue by eating dead zombies and taking bites from her own flesh.

  • The director has stated that there are two types of zombies (probably referring to hambies), the immortal ones and the immune ones, meaning there are people who are fully immune to the virus.
  • Hambies are dubbed as halfbies in the English dub. Both of the words are proclaimed by Yang Dae-su.
  • The director has stated in an interview about how one becomes a hambie, that he was inspired by Covid-19’s effect on some people, how some would immediately show symptoms, while others took time to show, with some who didn’t experience symptoms at all.
  • In the webtoon, hambies are not immune to attacks by zombies. They may exhibit symptoms of being infected, but zombies would still recognise them as survivors.
  • There is a theory, that in order to become a Hambie, a person must have any strong intention/desire. However it is not confirmed.
    • This is shown with both Gwi-nam's webtoon counterpart (one of his hands was bitten by zombies, but did not fully turn into a zombie) and Nam-ra's webtoon counterparts.
    • A common symptom seen in hambies in the webtoon is that they will eventually (in Nam-ra’s case) briefly lose their minds and attempt to attack and eat any uninfected.
    • In the webtoon Gwi-nam and Nam-ra are the only hambies seen.
