Hyosan High School was a fictional school located in Hyosan, South Korea. Most of the characters worked or studied within this academy. The school was where the initial zombie outbreak began.

History[]

Pre-Apocalypse[]

The school was located at the outskirts of Hyosan near a river. It was well known in Hyosan and had a good reputation. However, this reputation was only maintained by suppressing any reports of bullying within the school. This emboldened the bullies, who would often torment other students in class, as well as blackmailing their victims and threatening them into silence. The situation became so bad that at least two students attempted suicide prior to the zombie outbreak. The school's science teacher Lee Byeong-chan developed the virus because he felt that there was no other way to make the bullies stop tormenting his son.

Post-Apocalypse[]

The viral outbreak began when one of the school bullies, Kim Hyeon-ju, stayed late after school and was bitten by an infected mouse in the science lab when she tried to pet it after investigating the noise it made, where Byeong-chan had been using the equipment to try and find a cure for his son and wife entered the room not long after and realize what had happened. Byeong-chan tried to restrain Hyeon-ju by tying her to a radiator but she escaped the next day; after escaping, she was taken to the school nurse's office by Park Sun-hwa and bit the nurse before being sedated and taken to Hyosan Hospital.

The nurse succumbed to the virus during lunch break and attacked several students, causing a mass stampede through the canteen and panic within school grounds. The principal initially refused to believe what was happening, and even criticized Sun-hwa for calling an ambulance for Hyeon-ju, as it would make the school look bad. He told any outsiders who called that everything was fine. As such, the emergency services only found out about the virus when students and hospital patients began calling with reports of extreme violence.

It is unknown how many - if any - students were able to escape the campus during the initial outbreak, survived, or killed themselves to avoid it. In the webtoon, 37 were confirmed to have died by suicide. Several parents were also infected when they came to the school to find their children, including Lee Cheong-san's mother and Kim Ji-min's parents.

The day after the outbreak, the military sent two helicopters to the school. The first found Kim Cheol-soo, who lied about being the only survivor and left the Hyosan School Group locked in the fire escape stairwell. The second was sent to find Byeong-chan's laptop and was initially going to rescue the School Group once they had retrieved it. However, after Min Eun-ji was revealed to be a halfbie by biting Cheol-soo in the middle of a crowd of survivors despite the camp's zombie screening process, the military commander ordered all students to be left behind as potential halfbies. The information from Byeong-chan and his laptop revealed that the school was ground zero for the virus, and army commander Jin Seon-mu ordered it to be bombed.

After the bombing[]

The main structure of the school survived the explosion, but everything and everyone inside was burned, and a giant hole was left in the football field.

Trivia[]

  • In behind the scenes, Hyosan High School was filmed at Sunghee Girls' High School in South Korea. A private high school in Jeongha-dong, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The shooting took place in February 2021.
    • While most of the interior shots and roof scenes were filmed at a set. the original building does not have a rooftop area.
  • The school has a club called the ‘One Heart Club’, as shown by the jacket Gwi-nam wears after he becomes a halfbie. In the webtoon it's shown the club was a community service club.
  • There are several differences from the school in the webtoon, namely:
    • In the webtoon, the school has a bigger courtyard, was painted red and only had three floors.
    • The webtoon uniforms consisted of green polo shirts with the name tags and school logo stitched on them, and blue pants or skirts, due to the events in the webtoon taking place in summer.
    • The school does not seem to have confiscated phones from the students in the webtoon, as several characters throughout the series called their loved ones or received calls from them.
    • In the webtoon, police officers are dispatched to the school, and the group finds a zombified police officer in the hallway. In the series, it is implied that a fire crew was dispatched, but their fate is unknown. As the surviving students do not encounter them, and believe that no emergency service workers came to help in an official capacity.
    • The webtoon shows other survivors hiding around the school after the outbreak, who Gwi-nam deliberately targets and murders for fun. In the series, all of Gwi-nam's kills except Lee Na-yeon are for a specific purpose.
    • Despite the webtoon showing and hinting at other surviving students scattered throughout the school, with even the group realizing that at one point, in the show this was never (clearly) hinted at as much as the webtoon does.
    • In the webtoon, a group of three surviving students used the rain as cover to escape before the main group had the idea.
    • In the webtoon, senior year students wear yellow name tags.
    • In the webtoon, the school is not destroyed by a bomb, rather it's damaged due to being abandoned for eight months and due to a fire that started in a classroom.
  • The background students were portrayed by either unknown extras actors or the zombie actors, only one has been revealed in the entire series of Season 1, who is a Filipina actress, Noreen Joyce Guerra, who portrays Kang Yun-ah.
  • During the bombing a zombie is seen that has the same face as one of the background students, Seo Hee-ran but its unconfirmed if that zombie was her or if she even became a zombie.
  • Hyosan High School's number is 048-633-4527[1]
  • Hyosan High School's address is 17-9, Myeonhak-ro, Hyosan-si, Gyeonggi-do.
