Kim Ji-min (Korean: 김지민) was a supporting character in All of Us Are Dead and a member of the Hyosan School Group. She is portrayed by Kim Jin-young and is voiced by Jacqueline Misaye in the English Dub.
History[]
Pre-Apocalypse[]
Kim Ji-min lived in Hyosan and was childhood friends with Seo Hyo-ryung. She was a student of Class 2-5, where she sat next to Hyo-ryung, and actively participated in the school choir. Despite her parents' plans for their daughter to attend school in Seoul, Ji-min was afraid of relocating. Nam On-jo encouraged her to skip school for five days, which would result in the Principal rescinding his recommendation letter; Ji-min did so, though she would later regret the decision to remain in Hyosan after the zombie outbreak.
On the morning before the apocalypse, Ji-min's parents drop her off at Hyosan High School, giving her a pack of soondae for her and fellow members of the choir to eat. Ji-min takes the pack, but protests that they should not have given her anything before hurrying away, to her parents' bemusement. After Kim Hyeon-ju collapses in their classroom and is taken to the nurse, Ji-min, Hyo-ryung and Lee Na-yeon gossip about the possibility that Lee Byeong-chan abducted Hyeon-ju as revenge for his son's presumed suicide.
Post-Apocalypse[]
At the start of the outbreak, Ji-min hides in Class 2-5 alongside several other classmates and gym teacher Kang Jin-gu, and stops Na-yeon from holding the door shut when Lee Cheong-san and On-jo try to enter. She then helps to barricade the door, though she flees with the others to the science classroom when Jin-gu turns into a zombie and infects Kim Min-ji. When Na-yeon and Han Gyeong-su start fighting, Ji-min urges them to stop and instead help her in barricading the windows, physically intervening to separate the two. She attempts to console On-jo after Yoon I-sak is flung out of a window as a zombie, and later helps the group in creating a makeshift ladder using a fire hose, allowing them to descend to a lower floor.
In the broadcasting room, during a group discussion, Ji-min notes what zombies could potentially be sensitive to. Despite her prior friendship with Na-yeon and initially believing her claim that Gyeong-su was infected, Ji-min becomes irritated by her continuous efforts to insult and oust Gyeong-su. She is among the few who stand up to her, retorting that she has always been selfish. Later, she is shocked upon learning that Na-yeon deliberately wiped infected blood onto Gyeong-su's open scratch wound, and looks on with disdain as she exits the room.
The next day, Ji-min tries to comfort Hyo-ryung with hopes that they will be rescued. She hopes to visit her father's factory and her mother's café despite her aversion to the odors of both places, simply longing for her mother's soup. Hyo-ryung playfully jests that Ji-min has finally matured.
When the group pilots a drone outside the school, Ji-min spots her parents' truck crashed at the same location where they had dropped her off the day before. As they steer the drone closer, she sees her zombified parents trapped in the front seats. Overwhelmed by grief, Ji-min breaks down and later attempts to commit suicide by jumping out the window, but is promptly stopped by the other students. She continues to grieve in the recording room, where On-jo tries to console her, though she states that she has lost all hope. She then rests her head on the table, inadvertently activating the school intercom, which sparks Choi Nam-ra's idea to use it as a distraction for the zombies while they make their escape to the rooftop.
After Nam-ra is bitten by an infected Yoon Gwi-nam on their way to the rooftop, Ji-min and the group flee inside the music room. Ji-min refuses to dismiss Nam-ra as a threat to their safety, arguing that zombies, including "halfbies", are inherently dangerous to humans. She, along with a few other students, argues for Nam-ra's expulsion from the group, but Lee Su-hyeok ties himself to Nam-ra instead to reassure them.
Ji-min later finds the choir's video camera and views a recording of one of their past performances before recording her own message. In it, she holds the government and emergency services accountable for her parents' deaths due to their abandonment, and vows to exact revenge against everyone involved. She then addresses her parents, promising to survive and kill every zombie in their memory. Later, she can be seen in the background, curled up beside Hyo-ryung.
During the group's escape from the music room, Ji-min uses a drum to lure zombies toward the barricade and is the fourth person to exit the room. When they are trapped in the stairway, she helps the group in holding a large piece of tarpaulin down to block the oncoming zombies. Upon reaching the roof, she also helps set up a distress SOS sign, and is the first to join Yang Dae-su in singing around the campfire later that night. She admits to having deliberately sabotaged her parents plans' to transfer her to a school in Seoul, an act encouraged by On-jo, and says she regrets it now.
When Gwi-nam attacks the group on the roof, she is the first girl to join the fight, gripping onto his arm until he forcefully throws her back, resulting in a bloody nose. After Nam-ra throws Gwi-nam off the roof with her enhanced strength, Ji-min questions her about whether she would ever turn against them, but receives no response from Nam-ra, which upsets Ji-min. However, she later apologizes for her emotional outburst.
Later, when the military squad arrives to rescue the group, the other students push a despondent Ji-min to board the helicopter first. She is winched almost all the way up to the helicopter cabin, reaching a point where one of the soldiers is able to grab her hand, only to be lowered back down when the order is given to classify all survivors as infected but asymptomatic. She breaks down as the soldiers forcibly push her back towards the rest of the group, pleading with them to take her along. A soldier is instructed to shoot her, but instead, he fires warning shots into the air before departing with the helicopter. Ji-min weeps as rain falls and curses up at the sky, furious over their repeated abandonment by the government.
Death[]
Before their escape from the rooftop to the ground floor, the group decides to pair up and hold hands to ensure nobody is left behind. Ji-min and Hyo-ryung partner up and successfully make it outside the school with the rest of the group. However, as they flee from oncoming zombies, Hyo-ryung slips and falls, and Ji-min rushes to her aid. Upon seeing an approaching zombie, Ji-min leaves Hyo-ryung and flees in panic, but gets lost and is separated from the main group as a result. Zombies chase her onto the school field, where Ji-min has a final breakdown and is ultimately bitten. A voiceover reveals the evolution of the Jonas Virus as Ji-min turns into a zombie, accompanied by a shot of her face covered in large blisters and bleeding from the eyes.
She is seen among the massive horde of zombies obliterated in the Hyosan bombings along with Na-yeon, Gyeong-su, Oh Joon-yeong, Jung Min-jae, Nam So-ju and Cheong-san's mother.
Legacy[]
In Episode 12, Ji-min's name was included by the group survivors on the memorial tree. But there was no flashback of her brief and final moments from Hyo-ryung who arrived at the Quarantine Camp with the group.
Physical Appearance[]
Kim Ji-min had brown eyes, pale skin, and long black hair styled into a high ponytail with bangs for the entirety of the series. She wore the standard Hyosan High female uniform, but with plain dark green pants instead of a skirt, and a dark green sweater vest instead of the cardigan. In On-jo's flashback in Episode 1, she wore the Hyosan High School female summer uniform. In her zombie state, Ji-min had large blisters across her face, with blood streaks around her nose and lips, and her uniform bore grass and dirt marks from lying on the field. Right before the bombings, her hair had become disheveled also resulting in messing her bangs up and the sleeve revealing her bite mark was exposed.
Personality[]
Ji-min had a sociable, outspoken personality and placed great value on fairness. She intervened in fights between Na-yeon and Gyeong-su, and later expressed her disdain for Na-yeon not for accusing Gyeong-su's infection, but for her constant bullying and eventual betrayal. Ji-min also vocalized her frustration over the repeated abandonment of the school by the government, attributing it to the death of her parents. However, this outward anger may have been a cover for a sense of guilt, as she had regretted not being kind to her parents during their last interaction. Despite this, she had a deep love for them as their daughter, eagerly anticipating their reunion once they were rescued and longing for her mother's sundae soup.
Additionally, Ji-min was an invaluable member of the main surviving group trapped at Hyosan High, having consistently contributed to their survival efforts. She helped fortify barricades, making resources like a makeshift fire hose ladder and distress signal on the rooftop, fighting off zombies on multiple occasions, and even trying to fend off a much stronger Gwi-nam during his attack on the rooftop. Prior to learning her parents' deaths, Ji-min remained hopeful for the group's rescue, and provided comfort to others like On-jo and Hyo-ryung in times of distress.
However, after discovering her parents' fate, Ji-min fell into a deep depression, quickly losing all hope despite her initial optimism, snapping at On-jo when she tries to comfort her, and even attempting suicide. Her anxiety also increased, especially following Nam-ra's infection, and she harbored great resentment towards the government for their failure to rescue the group, which was exacerbated when they were abandoned again by a military squad on the rooftop. Throughout the course of the series, Ji-min was prone to several emotional breakdowns, ultimately leading to her death as she panicked and left Hyo-ryung behind, rendering herself vulnerable to approaching zombies.
