“ | You're not a zombie, are you? | ” |
–Na-yeon's last words. |
Lee Na-yeon (Korean: 이나연) was a supporting antagonist in All of Us Are Dead. She is portrayed by Lee Yoo-mi and voiced by Ru Kumagai in the English dub.
History[]
Pre-Apocalypse[]
Na-yeon was born into a wealthy family, and looks down on anyone who lives in poverty, such as Han Gyeong-su. She is particularly frustrated by fellow students like Gyeong-su, as it is implied that they live near her gated community and often use it as a shortcut, which she thinks is inappropriate. Na-yeon tries to make friends with Choi Nam-ra, another resident of the gated community, but Nam-ra ignores her.
Prior to the outbreak, she was a member of Class 2-5 and friends with Kim Ji-min and Seo Hyo-ryung. She was very sensitive to smells, and repeatedly commented that Lee Byeong-chan smelled like a corpse. When asked how she knew what a corpse smells like, she said that it was the only smell she didn't know, so it had to be that.
Post-Apocalypse[]
When the outbreak began, Na-yeon hid in Class 2-5 and tried to block entry to anyone else, including Lee Cheong-san and Nam On-jo. She becomes obsessed with the need to call emergency services, shouting at several other students, including Nam-ra, despite being told that none of them had a phone or could help her. When Kang Jin-gu arrives, she asks him if the teachers called the police, to which he lies and says they did. In the science lab she asks On-jo for the phone and angrily shouts when she realizes On-jo lost it. She then berates Gyeong-su who tells them to secure the room and says he is the reason Kim Min-ji died and they were forced to leave the classroom because he didn't block the door. Yang Dae-su then told them to cut it out and she angrily rips off her bow and headband while calling the group annoying.
In the broadcasting room, she panics on seeing Gyeong-su with a bloody nose and a scratch after a zombie fight. She tries to have him thrown out of the room, but instead their teacher, Park Sun-hwa, compromises by asking him to sit in the recording booth for half an hour. She tells Na-yeon that at the end of that half hour, if he has not turned, she will have to apologize to him.
After half an hour, Ji-min and the rest of the group press for her to admit she was wrong, and Sun-hwa reminds her that she has to apologize. What Sun-hwa doesn't know is that, during that half hour, she deliberately soaked her handkerchief with zombie blood. When she goes into the recording booth, she keeps her back to the window and starts by making it seem like she might apologize to him by showing him some affection, then infects him by rubbing the handkerchief over the cut on his hand, and proceeds to reveal that she just came to taunt him and had no real desire to apologize to him, shocking Gyeong-su. Meanwhile, the other survivors watching them assume that they kissed, but when Na-yeon comes out, Gyeong-su attempts to assault her, but is held back by Yang Dae-su, revealing that she did not apologize. When confronted for not giving Gyeong-su a real apology, Na-yeon purposefully stalls and avoids the group's questions, waiting for Gyeong-su to turn, so that she will be relieved from having to answer any more questions, and so that she can be proven right. Gyeong-su turns and Cheong-san is forced to lure him into falling out of the window, and Na-yeon gloats that she warned the others about him and that she was correct.
However, Nam-ra spotted her wiping the blood onto her handkerchief and told her to wipe it over a cut on her own leg to prove she didn't betray Gyeong-su. Na-yeon hesitates to do so, proving her guilt and prompting Cheong-san to shove her and call her a murderer. After hearing this, Na-yeon tears up, laments how she doesn't have any friends and claims she doesn't need anyone else before leaving. While in the hallway, she starts to sob loudly, attracting zombies. Sun-hwa runs after her and pushes her to safety in the music classroom, but is bitten in the process. Before she turns, she tells Na-yeon that she has to stay alive and find her way back to her classmates to apologize and do something helpful for them. Na-yeon then hides in the music cupboard and stays there, even when the surviving members of her class are sheltering in the music classroom, as she does not have the courage to make up for her mistakes, fearing that they will not accept her offer.
After the rest of the class leave, Na-yeon takes the camera that they used to record messages to the outside world. She runs back to the cupboard and watches the messages, remembering Gyeong-su and Sun-hwa and how she hallucinated Gyeong-su in the place of the zombie that bit Sun-hwa. She begins to feel remorseful and packs some food into a bag, planning to go to the roof, find the others, and ask for their forgiveness. However, she leaves the cupboard just as Yoon Gwi-nam arrives. Seeking an easy meal to recover from his injuries, he picks her up, eating her neck and part of her torso, afterwards she tranformed into a zombie off-screen as she isn't shown when Gwi-nam was climbing out the window.
Later, she appears as a zombie on the school field and is killed by the bomb dropped there.
Physical Appearance[]
Na-yeon had pale skin and red hair she kept loose, and was of average height. She wore the standard Hyosan High school female uniform but with a pale pink cardigan with orange, purple, yellow, blue, and green buttons instead of the cardigan, on the day of the outbreak, as well as pink Adidas Sambarose sneakers and a dark red headband. After reaching the science room, she removed both the headband and the bow. In episode 1 when Yoon I-sak was talking about Mr Lee, she is seen wearing the Hyosan High school female summer uniform in the flashback. As a zombie, her hair was messy, her face was bloody and her cardigan was dirty implying that she jumped out of a window, and it had a big hole in the bottom likely due to Gwi-nam grabbing her, or by it getting caught on something she is also missing one of her buttons as only four were shown and a outline of where the button was is seen around the tear, as well as a blue thing around her waist that covered her skirt.
Personality[]
Na-yeon was a spoiled and stubborn rich girl who bullied poorer students. Her actions revolved around her own safety above that of the group, and she became frustrated and even paranoid when she feels thwarted, seeming to take other students' actions personally. Her mental state declined quickly during the outbreak, and snapped entirely when Nam-ra exposed her for killing Gyeong-su. After finding the video camera and watching the others videos, which reminded her of what Sun-hwa told her after she was bitten, she felt guilty and attempted to make up for her actions by bringing food and drinks to her starving classmates. However, the attempt was unsuccessful, as she was zombified by Gwi-nam upon an encounter.
