I'm not going. I'm scared. What are we gonna do if the zombies catch us?—Hyo-ryung's concern to the group
Seo Hyo-ryung (Korean: 서효령) is a major character in Netflix's All of Us Are Dead. She is portrayed by Kim Bo-yoon and voiced by Lisa Yamada in the English dub. In the Spanish dub, she is voiced by Jennifer Zamora.
History[]
Pre-Apocalypse[]
Not much is known about Hyo-ryung's life, except that she is childhood friends with Kim Ji-min.
After Kim Hyeon-ju is taken to the nurse's office, she discusses the situation with Ji-min and Lee Na-yeon, concluding that Lee Byeong-chan likely kidnapped her as revenge for his son's supposed suicide.
Post-Apocalypse[]
During the outbreak, Hyo-ryung hides in Class 2-5 with the rest of the Hyosan School Group and flees with them first to the science lab, then to the broadcasting room. When Na-yeon accuses Han Gyeong-su of being infected, Hyo-ryung initially believes her, but later changes her mind when he does not turn after half an hour in the recording room.
During a conversation with teacher Park Sun-hwa, Hyo-ryung asks if some of the other students might have survived the outbreak. Sun-hwa says they might have, and that the fact that any of them are alive means that they are very lucky. Later, Hyo-ryung and Yang Dae-su were both distraught when Na-yeon and Sun-hwa left the room. Hyo-ryung says she was scared because she didn't know how she'd feel if she heard either of them screaming, but does not seem to be as convinced as Dae-su that they are still alive.
When Ji-min's parents are revealed to be zombies, Hyo-ryung is unable to comfort her friend as she, too, is overwhelmed with horror and grief, suggesting that she was close to the family. She later records a message to her own parents, introducing them to her classmates before crying and telling them she misses them both, and that she's sorry.
In the music room, Hyo-ryung is the first to notice that Choi Nam-ra has been bitten. When she begins to show halfbie traits, Hyo-ryung is terrified and her heartbeat and breathing are - according to Nam-ra - the loudest in the room. During the escape attempt, Hyo-ryung uses a tambourine to attract zombies to the barricade, and is the second to leave the classroom. In the stairwell, she helps Nam-ra and the other students to throw a sheet of blue tarpaulin down the stairs and hold it there to try and keep the zombies back.
On the roof, she is the third person to join in when Dae-su starts singing. She tells Dae-su to stop putting himself down by comparing himself to Oh Joon-yeong, and Dae-su teases her, asking if she has a crush on him. Hyo-ryung denies it and hits him on the arm. Jang Wu-jin later jokes that they should just date already. She does not take part in the fight with Yoon Gwi-nam when he tries to attack Cheong-san, but checks Ji-min for injuries afterwards.
When the army squad arrives, the soldiers put her in a harness ready to be winched up after Ji-min, but are forced to strip it off her when they are ordered to leave them behind. Hyo-ryung and Ji-min run up to the soldiers to beg them to take them, and when the soldiers leave, Hyo-ryung falls to the floor in despair and On-jo hugs her. Later, when it rains, she cups her hands to catch the water and cries.
During the rooftop escape, Dae-su offers to hold hands with her, but Hyo-ryung takes Ji-min's hand instead. But when they reach the path to the gym, Hyo-ryung slips and falls, and Ji-min panics and abandons her. Wu-jin runs back to save her and tackles a zombie before picking her up, and both are saved by Jang Ha-ri, who ushers them into the auditorium. She witnessed Joon-yeong's sacrifice while she and the others attempt to escape through the zombies.
After their escape from the school, Hyo-ryung reaches the checkpoint with the other surviving students. When the military questions her about the outbreak, she cries and says nothing. A few months later, she joins On-jo and the others in paying their respects at the mountain shrine, and to visit Nam-ra on the school roof. When On-jo asks if she's sure she wants to go, Hyo-ryung says that she is. Before Nam-ra appears, Hyo-ryung asks the others who they think lit the campfire.
Physical Appearance[]
Hyo-ryung has a slightly chubby build with short, black hair in a bob cut with bangs, brown eyes, and pale skin. She wears the standard Hyosan High School female uniform, but with a pale pink sleeveless sweater instead of the cardigan, as well as sweatpants under her skirt, a yellow backpack, and Saucony Original sneakers. The sweater has thick white stripes around the collar and bottom hem, and a tennis symbol with the text "Play Goofy" on the left breast. In On-jo's flashback in Episode 1, she wears the Hyosan High School female summer uniform. After the apocalypse starts, she removes the bow. She leaves the backpack on the roof, and it's assumed the backpack was burnt in the bombing as it's not seen when they return to the rooftop. On the day of the apocalypse, she's seen wearing a pink bang curler which she removes after the outbreak.
During the auditorium escape, she is seen wearing hockey equipment as armor to protect her from the zombies.
In the Quarantine Camp, she is seen wearing a puffy pale pink corduroy jacket, a black and white striped sweater, a white cardigan, pale, possibly light brown slacks, and white sneakers.
Personality[]
Due to a low amount of focus, little is known about Hyo-ryung's personality. She is deeply emotional, crying at each group member's death, including Na-yeon's presumed death in Episode 3. She's also shown to be empathetic as seen when she tried to comfort Nam On-jo after Yoon I-sak's death and when she shows visible concern for On-jo after Lee Cheong-san got separated from Lee Su-hyeok. In Episode 6, she stood back and watched while the others stopped her best friend, Kim Ji-min, from attempting to commit suicide by jumping out the window by the broadcast room, most likely because she was in shock.
She is the only one who did not fight Yoon Gwi-nam in Episode 9, possibly suggesting she's not confrontational. She has a short temper with Dae-su, often snapping at him whenever he says something she thinks is irrelevant or that annoys her. When the military arrived, and Dae-su hugged her, she hit him for being overexcited.

Trivia[]
- Despite the patch on her sweater, it's unknown if Hyo-ryung plays tennis.
- Hyo-ryung is one of two characters confirmed to have died in the original webtoon but survived in the Netflix series, the other being Yang Dae-su.
- In the webtoon, Hyo-ryung didn't escape the classroom and instead climbed out of the window and stood on a ledge to escape from the zombified teacher. Just when it seemed like Su-hyeok saved her, the zombie figured another way to reach her by running into the classroom she was climbing into and leapt at her, biting her and causing both of them to fall off the building. After reanimating, she attacked a PE class and wasn't seen again.
- In the webtoon, her name is Hyo-jeong.
- Hyo-ryung's first name is only said twice during the first season. Her last name is only shown in the credits.
- She is the only surviving character to have already been inside class 2-5 before Cheong-san and On-jo arrived.
- Bloodstains can be seen on her uniform before Cheong-san and On-jo reach the classroom, implying that she may have been attacked by a zombie before hiding in Class 2-5.
