“ | That means... I'm god. HEY, CHEONG-SAN! | ” |
–Gwi-nam's infamous quote after becoming a Halfbie |
Yoon Gwi-nam (Korean: 윤귀남) is the main antagonist of the first season of the South Korean Netflix drama All of Us Are Dead.
Gwi-nam was a student who attended Hyosan High School and was a bully, alongside Son Myeong-hwan, Park Chang-hoon, and Kim Hyeon-ju. When the zombie apocalypse broke out, he later became infected and became a halfbie. He is the archenemy of Lee Cheong-san, vowing to kill him for gouging his eye out.
He is portrayed by Yoo In-soo. In the English dub, he is voiced by Caleb Yen and voiced by Marc Winslow in the Spanish dub.
History[]
Pre-Apocalypse[]
Gwi-nam was one of four notorious bullies of the school. He didn't stop bullying because of how much he enjoyed it. He was ordered around by his group of "friends", making him do all their dirty work. He wasn't a good person, forcing other students to do horrible things just for the fun of it. Gwi-nam tended to be very inappropriate and never thought twice about the things he said or did in the company of other people. At some point before the year of the apocalypse, Gwi-nam crashed his father's car. Gwi-nam is also friends with Eun-ji's mother on Facebook. He was seen in Lee Byeong-chan's science class looking at Min Eun-ji's nude pictures on his phone, and started drawing "I'm so sexy" on her back causing the other students to laugh and make fun of her while Byeong-chan explained his lecture and did not notice him.
Post-Apocalypse[]
Gwi-nam got worse during the apocalypse. When he was still human, he decided he would only fend for himself. There were multiple situations where he chose his own life over others. He coldly throws several students to the zombies and even starts killing faculty members. He was one of the very few characters who actually learnt that stabbing a Zombie’s neck would kill them almost instant. Most of the time (even after becoming Hambie) he possessed a knife. After he was bitten, he became very powerful. He used his power to get revenge, and murdered many students within the school. Notably, he killed Myeong-hwan as he was fed up following his orders, Jung Min-jae for supposedly hiding where Cheong-san was and Lee Na-yeon for food. His rivalry with Cheong-san lasted until his (possible) final breath.
Due to Cheong-san filming him murdering the principal, Gwi-nam chases after him for the phone just so he can delete the evidence to prevent Cheong-san from contacting the authorities on him. He chased Cheong-san to the library where he killed a paranoid student for being in the way, then the duo chased on top of the book shelves while being surrounded by the infected below them. When Gwi-nam finally caught Cheong-san, Cheong-san stabbed him in the eye with the phone and pushed him off from the book shelf, letting him be devoured by the infected.
When the group decides to leave the school and reach the construction site, he catches Cheong-san and the others, and bites him on the arm before being pushed off from the building by him. When Cheong-san sacrifices himself for the group's safety, Gwi-nam and him start a 1v1 with Gwi-nam taking his left eye out, just like how Cheong-san did to him when he was still human, and he thought he had won. When the school was bombed, Cheong-san had a chance to grab him, while he was distracted covering his ears from the loud sound of explosion, from behind and fell with him down the elevator shaft, with Gwi-nam's body seen being engulfed by the explosion. Though since neither his nor Cheong-san’s bodies are clearly seen at the bottom of the shaft, it’s possible he survived.
Physical Appearance[]
Gwi-nam has a black mullet that reaches his shoulders with a clean undercut and dark brown eyes. He has a tall build. He wore the collar shirt of the Hyosan High School male uniform with a black T-shirt underneath and a pair of plain dark green pants instead of the trousers. He is seen wearing red sneakers during the whole show. He wore white and black checkered sneakers while bullying Jin-su on a rooftop during Episode 1. The way he dresses is completely different from the other students, almost unrecognizable as the Hyosan High School uniform. After becoming a halfbie, his black shirt had a few small holes, and a big tear showing a wound he got while getting devoured, he wore a white athletic jacket with a blue highlight at the shoulder area of where the sleeves start and a small heart on the left side of the chest as. The collar, zipper, end of sleeves and the red heart are red. It is noted that the main colors of the sweater are red, blue and white. The words on the back of the jacket roughly translates to "One Heart". It is unknown where he retrieved this jacket. A possibility is that he found it somewhere clean due to the jacket not having blood during its first appearance. He is seen later in the show with his left eye being stabbed which was later replaced with a bloodied scar over his left eye given to him by Cheong-san in their battle of life or death.
Personality[]
“ | Stop acting tough. Do you really think that makes you cool? No one thinks that way. You're just scared because you'll get caught for killing the principal. You're still a coward and a loser. | ” |
–Lee Cheong-san to Yoon Gwi-nam before their final standoff |
Gwi-nam is very uncaring, sadistic and doesn't take others' feelings into consideration. During his screen-time, he has demonstrated a cunning, cruel, and ferocious personality. He’s shown to be insecure and seeks respect from other students, despising being referred to as “the bullies gopher”. He appeared to have a friendship with the other bullies although he was mistreated by their leader. He's an overly obsessed stalker who wants to murder whoever he hates. He is a ruthless bully who feels no remorse for his actions such as him bullying Jin-su, Eun-ji, Cheol-soo, and possibly other students along with his group. He is also selfish, as he chose to throw two different students to the zombies and a cafeteria employee (who was offering to help him) when the zombie outbreak happened to save himself rather than to protect them. In a flashback in Episode 4, he, Chang-hoon, and Myeong-hwan pretend to feel guilty and regretful towards the three, the school board, and the police, so that they can get away with it at the end.
When Gwi-nam became a halfbie, his insanity and cruelness amplified, he became vengeful and murderous in chasing Cheong-san around the zombie-infested school and snapped Myeong-hwan's arm, and fed him to the zombies without remorse. He saved Lee Su-hyeok but tried to kill him after he refused to tell where Cheong-san was. He claims to be willing to let the rest of the group go if they let him have Cheong-san. He ate Na-yeon, who was remorseful for her actions and wanted to go up to apologize. He claimed he’d spare Cheong-san's life if he ran away after gouging his eye out but it’s unknown if he meant it or was lying out of sadism.

Trivia[]
- Gwi-nam's halfbie infection started on October 21, 2021. Same day as Min Eun-ji, Choi Nam-ra and possibly Lee Byeong-chan.
- In the original Webtoon Now at Our School, Gwi-nam does not lose his eye and is a psychopathic delinquent who tends to sexually assault and rape female students whereas only his Netflix counterpart is a bully. He instead loses his penis after a girl bites it off when being raped orally. He is already interested in pursuing survivors from the start in the original Webtoon whereas he started to do it in the Netflix series after Cheong-san intervenes and injures his eye. Gwi-nam is also not responsible for Choi Nam-ra's infection in the Webtoon. His Netflix counterpart is only interested in killing Cheong-san whereas his Webtoon counterpart is focused on eating and sexually assaulting female survivors.
- Additionally, Gwi-nam's Webtoon counterpart dies from an arrow shot from Jang Ha-ri’s bow at the rooftop, whereas it is unknown whether Gwi-nam's Netflix counterpart (along with Cheong-san's Netflix counterpart) survives the explosion caused by the military bombing or not.
- Unlike his Netflix counterpart, Gwi-Nam’s webtoon counterpart did not have regenerative abilities (this is shown in Episode 9, where Nam-ra uses a stick to stab Gwi-Nam’s leg, but Gwi-Nam appears to be intact from the attack).
- In the webtoon, Gwi-nam killed seven people, where as in the series he killed eight.
- Throughout the Netflix series, Gwi-Nam has a running gag where, after every encounter, he ends up falling down before getting back up with little to no problems (possibly except Episode 11). Overall, he has suffered from 6 total falls throughout the series, with the explosion from the bombing being the last one in the first season. He was presumed dead roughly 3 times (1st when Cheong San saw him getting bitten by zombies, 2nd when Su Hyeok thrown him from 1st floor and 3rd when construction site was bombed). However, after his unexpected appearance when the group was trying to unlock rooftop door, the group thought he was immortal.
- Na-yeon and Min-jae were infected by Gwi-nam after being bitten on the neck and the shoulder and turned into regular zombies, but Choi Nam-ra and Cheong-san was infected by being bitten on the arm and the former was shown to have become a halfbie while the latter is heavily implied to be one.
- Yoo In-soo said in a interview that despite all the action and running scenes, he actually gained weight while filming the series; this was due to the fake blood, which he kept eating due to it being applied to his teeth, was made mostly using high fructose syrup, which is very sweet but high in calories. At the end of the first season, he has gained around 10 kg.
- Yoo In-soo actually knew the director before production of the series began, as he had met him during an acting competition.
- Gwi-nam is one of the few characters whose English voice actor starred in Honkai: Star Rail (in this case Caleb Yen, the voice actor of Caelus), with the others being Park Mi-jin (voiced by Jenny Yokobori), Park Hee-su and Kim Min-ji (both voiced by Courtney Lin).
- Yoo In-soo starred in the Korean TV series Sweet Revenge as one of the antagonists alongside Lomon and Choi Yi-hyun.
